Refunct - It Just Feels Good

REFUNCT

I've had this little game sitting in my Steam library since late 2015. Bought it on whim, it was 3 bucks and the screenshots were visually appealing. Like a lot of small games it quickly disappeared down the back log hole. Last weekend I installed it and gave it a go.

Refunct is a first person platformer - which usually is one of the worst view points to play that game mechanic from - but Refunct nails it. The controls are both tight enough that the response time is perfect but with enough loose control you can correct, drift and slide in a way that feels real good. There are enough variations in how the world is put together that as soon as you think you have it nailed another set of pillars rise up and you think how can I get over and/or up there? Then you put together a series of wall jumps and leaps of faith and you've got it. And it feels good.

This is a minimalist game. Both visually, and content wise. The simple platforms and pillars that you jump on (changing color as you do) are easy to read from the background. As you climb and leap to red buttons that raise more platforms out the water (you can even look into the water and see them below the surface) the shadows build between them and the sunlight hits you once you rise above. It's just nice.

For 3 dollars and 45 minutes of my time I found Refunct to be really satisfying.
