What Remains of Edith Finch - Bad Luck Doesn't Even Begin to Cover It

What Remains of Edith Finch

This week I am going to be brief but positive.

What Remains of Edith Finch is a first person story driven game. It's not very long (around 3 hours) so I am not going to go deep into the contents of the game as it would just spoil the things that make it good.

While small What Remains of Edith Finch excels at what it does have. The visuals are fantastic and put together with the consideration that you are in a real place but also in such a way that each set is an interesting place and your curiosity it piqued to look closer at much of it. Both the incredibly high resolution textures and the light/shadow work ooze with deep atmosphere.

Sound and music also play a large part in bringing the environments to life. Each item you touch, each foot fall and each set piece is rich with the sounds. The voice acting is superb and along with the intriguing story do an excellent job of drawing you in. I was so enthralled I had to force myself not to play it all in one sitting (not that it would be a bad way to play it).

As tempted as I am to want to talk about the story of What Remains of Edith Finch I am not going to. It's like a movie where you're better off skipping the trailer. There are too many surprises and it's all about discovery. It's well written, paced and unfolds in just the right way. There are both elements of wonder, whimsy, sadness and loss. It's a story about how family members relate to each other in the face of unbelievably unlucky events.

The story based "walking-simulator" game genre isn't for everyone and for the length some might balk at the price but the quality of work done to make What Remains of Edith Finch is top notch. Like a good film I would even go back and play this again.
